Review

  1. I have been to stores after stores looking for a nice DSLR. I was about to buy Canon T3i when I saw this Nex 5. It was exactly what I was looking for. Then did my research and found out about the clicking noise on recording videos. Went to Sony flagship store and they showed me when you record a video and move a lot, the noise comes, but when you are recording slowly there is no noise. I agree to that but whats the gurantee i will only be using it slowly. I am spending so much money, I dont want any noise at all. What is sony doing regarding this problem? Nothing, all they offer is send for service and they will fix it. Whats the point of buying a new camera when you know you need to send for fix right away. It takes out all the joy of buying a new camera. Sony needs to recall all its products and fix it right away. I started with $500 budget for a camera and because of Nex 5N I am ready to spend the money for it but not till Sony fixes its problem. beside that its a great camera, I tried it and I loved it. 3D panoramic is awesome, if you want just for camera use then go for it.
  2. I bought this camera the moment it went on sale. I had been in the market for an SLR for a while but had never pulled the trigger on a purchase. I was going to buy a traditional a series SLR when I saw these. All the same feature and performance but in a much smaller and easily carried package. I will not go into detail but to say this camera is beautiful and takes incredible pictures. The video quality is nice and it going to be used for professional work. The clicking issue is a non issue. if you're going to the trouble to have beautiful HD video you should suck it up an buy an external audio recorder that allows you flexibility in recording your subject and your your breathing or the sound of your nails scraping across the nurling on the lens barrel.
  3. Unfortunately, my camera bought on last friday came with this "click" problem! It is unbelievable! Why Sony did not spread this information to the Sony Stores? By the way, the camera performance is awesome!
  4. I was very happy with the photo quality, esp. the low noise in higher ISO's. Upon taking my first video with the camera, sharp loud clicking sounds are recorded with the slightest movement of the camera. The noise is from some loose mechanical component in the camera. I panned very gently and it still occurred. There's no point in having 1080p video quality accompanied by corrupted audio. This seems to be a design flaw in the camera as it is a widespread problem; just search the Internet for NEX-5n click. If you hold the camera to your ear and move it, you will hear the click even with the camera powered off. The microphone is picking up this mechanical ly generated sound. This defect has ruined and otherwise excellent camera. Sony has acknowledged this fault but has not revealed the cause as of yet. I don't see how it could be properly fixed by a firmware upgrade. It could be reduced by a firmware upgrade by reducing the audio recording gain, agc, etc, but this would cause side effects with the rest of the audio. Sony should recall these cameras and halt sales of the Nex-5n until this issue is rectified. If not for this problem the camera deserves 5 stars.
